Where to take a wine vacation in England: 10 ideas

10 IDEAS FOR WINE VACATIONS IN ENGLAND.

As someone who has travelled to some very well known wine countries, like Argentina and South Africa, I love nothing more than a vineyard vacation. But sometimes it’s more interesting to find hidden gems, for example, I’ve recently visited Cyprus and North Macedonia and discovered amazing vineyards.

England is one such hidden gem when it comes to wine holidays. And, as you would expect from an English Wine blog I want to tell you about 10 amazing wine vacations that you can take in England.

England has become a fantastic destination for wine lovers, with an increasing number of vineyards producing world-class wines, stunning landscapes to explore, and charming villages to discover.

Here’s a guide to some of the best wine regions in England, with vineyard recommendations, nearby attractions, and tips for making the most of your wine trip.

1. Kent – The Wine Garden of England

kent

I’m a little biased, but as a girl from Kent, I am putting this county as my number one recommendation for a wine vacation in England.

Where to stay and vineyards to visit for a wine vacation in Kent

For vineyard vacation in Kent, here are two great areas where you could base yourself.

Option one: Tunbridge Wells

Stay at One Warwick Park Hotel – a chic boutique hotel, close to The Pantiles (a pretty area of the town.)

If you choose to stay in Tunbridge Wells, you can access some of my favourite vineyards in this area.

Balfour Winery is only a few stops on the train close to Staplehurst – a super winery with a gorgeous garden and terrace. In the summer, Herbert Hall – found about 20 minutes by bike from Balfour, or a short taxi ride away – is a delightful contrast. A small and family run vineyard, with only a few tables in the garden.

For a second day of vines and wines, combine a visit to glorious Squerrys Winery (a fancy vineyard with a beautiful restaurant or tasting bar) with Mount Vineyard (a more casual place with a pizza restaurant.)

Option two: Tenterden

Tenterden, or the surrounding area is a good base from which to visit some of the more famous vineyards of Kent, such as Chapel Down.

Consider staying in either the Woolpack Inn (in Tenterden) – shown above. Or, for something a little more unusual – Sissinghurst Castle Farmhouse (shown below.) Both are quintessentially English choices that will enhance your wine vacation in England.

If you choose to stay near to Tenterden, you can visit some of the most famous vineyards in this area.

Start with Chapel Down (Tenterden) known for its premium sparkling wines, Chapel Down offers vineyard tours and tastings in a beautiful countryside setting. There’s also an onsite restaurant.

Be sure to visit Gusbourne Wine Estate (Appledore) a rather fancy vineyard, with an upmarket restaurant. And, don’t miss Biddenden Vineyard – a gorgeous place famed for it’s Ortega Wine.

Last but not least, a more low key venue is Woodchurch Wines (Woodchurch). I really love the laid back feel at this vineyard, and the option to order food like sourdough pizzas.

There are many more vineyards in Kent – find a full list here.

If you’d rather stay on a vineyard – check out this list of the best vineyard hotels in the UK.

  • Visit Sissinghurst Castle Garden, one of England’s most famous gardens.
  • Visit the historic spa town of Tunbridge Wells, now known for having lots of lovely independent restaurants and cafes.
  • Kent is also home to lots of beautiful historic properties, like Scotney Castle and Hever Castle. Both of which can be visited.

Transport Tips

Kent is easily accessible from London by train, with services to Ashford International and Tunbridge Wells and Tenterden running very regularly.

You can either book tours, starting in London or Ashford, use trains to get to and from vineyards, book a driver or of course hire a car.

Although there is a vineyard as far south as Penzance, the majority of the vineyards in Cornwall are in and around Bodmin or St Austell. Consider either of these as a base, or opt for Padstow on the north coast. Here are a few options:
