Taste Test: Lyme Bay Pinot Noir 2021 review + pairing tips

LYME BAY PINOT NOIR 2021: A SILKEN SIP OF SUMMER ROMANCE (OR A DATE NIGHT BY FIRELIGHT).

If the Lyme Bay Chardonnay is the loud, lovable guest at a dinner party—the one with a booming laugh and eccentric jewellery—then their Pinot Noir 2021 is the quietly spoken, cardigan-wearing librarian who only speaks when they’ve got something astonishingly clever to say. Soft, nuanced, and a little mysterious.

I recently gave this bottle a whirl (in a glass,), and I’m very glad I did. It’s been on my “to try” list for a while—partly because Lyme Bay know their way around a grape, and partly because English Pinot Noir is a trusted “go to” when it comes to English red wine.

In this blog post, I’ll give you the full lowdown: What does the Lyme Bay Pinot Noir 2021 taste like? What should you serve it with? And—is it the silky seducer your wine rack has been waiting for?

About Lyme Bay Winery and Pinot Noir

Lyme Bay Winery is based in Devon, but the magic starts further east—in the sun-kissed vineyards of Essex. Where fake tan and fine wine coexist in glorious contradiction. Lyme Bay work with some of the best grape growers in the country. The low rainfall and long growing season in Essex make it one of the UK’s best spots for producing ripe, expressive fruit—especially for varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that demand a bit of TLC.

Pinot Noir is famously fussy—it needs the Goldilocks of growing conditions. And cool-climate regions (like England) are often where this grape thrives.

Why? Because in a cooler climate, Pinot Noir ripens slowly, allowing those delicate red fruit flavours—think cherry, raspberry and cranberry—to develop with nuance, not jamminess. You also get those soft, supple tannins and a natural, refreshing acidity that gives the wine lift and elegance.

Tasting Notes for Lyme Bay Pinot Noir

So to the taste test, here’s my review of the Lyme Bay Pinot Noir:

Appearance – A deep ruby red, it catches the light and offers a glint of translucency.

Aroma – A swirl of ripe cherries and blackcurrants, lifted with a hint of spice. There’s a whiff of something earthier too.

Taste – This is not a bruiser. It’s soft, supple, and oh-so-sumptuous. Ripe red berries lead the charge—morello cherry, a bit of raspberry—followed by a flicker of smoke and oak.

Mouthfeel – Silky. Satiny. The kind of wine you wish to swish around your mouth.

Pairing suggestions for Lyme Bay Pinot Noir

I served this beauty with a chicken jalfrezi (I know, I know—rogue pairing), and honestly? It worked. The wine’s lightness held up without clashing, and the cherry brightness complemented the spices.

It would also be a dream with duck, game birds, or lighter dark meats—venison burgers or even lamb koftas. I’d also try it with fruity dishes (think plum sauce or a cherry glaze) or an upmarket BBQ menu.

Avoid anything too punchy or acidic—no blue cheese, no vinegar-heavy salads.

Occasions and serving tips for Lyme Bay Pinot Noir

This is the wine you open on a romantic date, preferably with a few candles and a good playlist. It’s great for fireside conversations, long summer nights with fancy grilled food, or those “I just want something elegant and uncomplicated” evenings.

It could be served slightly chilled – or room temperature. Depending on the season when you’re drinking it. And of course, an OTT massive wine glass is compulsory.

My review of Lyme Bay Pinot Noir

This is one of the best English red wines I’ve tasted. It’s elegant, poised, and doesn’t try too hard. A wine with grace, not bravado. It won’t bowl you over with body—but that’s not the point.

TASTE: 9/10

QUAFFABILITY: 9/10

VALUE FOR MONEY: 8/10

BUY AGAIN: Yes

It’s balanced, refined, and effortlessly charming. If you like your reds heavy, boozy, and all brute strength—move along. But if you like something a little more subtle, that lingers enough to make you think, I want another bottle of that, then this is the one.
