English Ortega Wine for all tastes & budgets

ENGLISH ORTEGA WINE FOR ALL TASTES & BUDGETS.

If you’re venturing into the enchanting world of English wines, let’s put a spotlight on a lesser-known but utterly delightful variety: Ortega. This grape might not grab headlines like its vineyard cousins, but it certainly deserves a toast for its unique charm.

This blog post will cover all the headlines about Ortega wine, including serving suggestions and some top picks for you to try.

What is Ortega wine?

Pronounced or-TEG-a, Ortega is a white grape variety that thrives in cooler climates, making it a perfect match for England’s less-than-tropical weather.

It produces wines that are aromatic and full-bodied, often with a delightful balance of sweetness and acidity, reminiscent of a peachy summer day.

Best English Ortega wine

Whether you’re on a budget or looking to indulge, there’s an English Ortega wine with your name on it. Here are some favorites that capture the essence of this varietal:

1 / The OG – Biddenden Ortega, Kent – This wine is a fantastic introduction to Ortega. It’s affordable and widely loved for its vibrant and fruity profile. It has won many wine awards. Expect notes of peach, apple, and a hint of sweet spice. It’s like a sunny day in a bottle.

Many think of Biddenden as the original grower of Ortega in the UK. You can visit this Kent vineyard, or buy it direct online for £14.90.

❤️Fun fact – this was the wine that my now partner bought me on our first date. Love at first sight.

2 / The budget choice – Laurel Vineyard, Ortega: Whilst this is a less expensive bottle, the quality is n ot compromised. Made by Laurel Vineyard, one of Yorkshire’s best wineries, this is a floral and interesting Ortega. Buy it direct from the vineyard for £11.40.

3 / The special one – Westwell Ortega, Kent – For those special occasions, the Westwell Ortega presents a beautifully crafted wine. With its elegant balance of acidity and sweetness and flavors of stone fruit and honey, it’s a wine that impresses and delights. You can visit this vineyard in Kent, or buy online direct from the vineyard. They offer a discount on six bottles, or one retails for £19.99.

How to serve English Ortega wine

To fully appreciate the aromatic profile of Ortega, serve it chilled but not too cold. Aim for around 8-10°C (46-50°F). This temperature range helps to unlock the floral and fruity aromas without muting them.

If you’ve left the wine at room temperature, a quick 30-minute stint in the fridge should bring it to the ideal chill. Just enough to refresh but not enough to suppress its lovely aromas. And please, skip the ice!

Food pairings for English Ortega wine

Ortega’s versatility makes it a delightful companion to a variety of dishes. Here are some pairing ideas to enhance your dining experience:

Fruit-Forward Desserts – Ortega’s sweet floral notes make it a natural pair for desserts, especially fruit-based ones. Try it with an apple tart or peach cobbler, and watch the flavors dance.

Recipe suggestion – for a summer celebration, try this brown sugar pavlova with fruit.

Spicy Asian Cuisine – The slight sweetness of Ortega beautifully offsets the heat from Asian spices. Whether it’s Thai, Vietnamese, or Indian cuisine, Ortega can handle the spice and bring its own zest to the table.

Recipe suggestion – try this fragrant one pan Thai green salmon dish with your bottle of English Ortega.

Seafood – Ortega and seafood are friends indeed. The wine’s brightness complements the delicate flavors of fish and shellfish wonderfully. Try it with grilled sea bass or a creamy seafood pasta.

Recipe suggestion – try this braised Seabass with courgette and harissa mayo.

Cheese Pairings – Pair Ortega with milder cheeses, such as Gouda or Havarti. The wine’s fruitiness will enhance the creaminess of these cheeses, creating a perfect match.
