M&S Lark Song Balfour Rosé Wine Review

M&S LARK SONG BALFOUR ROSÉ WINE REVIEW

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day. The lark is singing. And M&S is leading the way when it comes to serving up English wine for a reasonable price point.

I’ve tried a few of their latest English wine creations, including the groundbreaking Pet Nat and the Bramble Hill English Sparkling.

This time, the M&S Lark Song English Rosé was sitting on the supermarket shelf just waiting for me to snaffle it. In this review, I’ll let you know what I thought about it. Is it worth buying? And, crucially, how does this English wine compare to Provence rosé?

About M&S Lark Song Balfour Rosé Wine

M&S Lark Song English Rosé is made with Kent based vineyard, Balfour. This is an award winning producer of English wine, with 20 plus years experience of wine making in the ‘wine garden of England.’

I believe that M&S have been selling different vintages of Lark Song for a few years now, with the 2023 the latest available. It is a dry rosé wine made with a selection of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, & Regent. The latter is a new grape for me, but I have since learnt that it is a red grape bursting with berry flavour.

Incidentally, I have visited Balfour multiple times and whilst I adore their wine, it is the ambience of the vineyard that is the biggest draw. They have created a beautiful terrace and offer up an excellent visitor experience. When friends ask which vineyard to visit near to London, I always suggest Balfour.

Whilst they do not serve the M&S Lark Song wine, they do have a wide range of still and sparkling on offer – as well as a reasonably priced wine tasting flight. Next time you have a spare Saturday afternoon, pop down! I promise it will not disappoint.

Tasting notes for M&S Lark Song Balfour Rosé Wine

So to the taste test – here’s my review of M&S Lark Song Balfour Rosé Wine.

Appearance – light pink verging on salmon in colour. Pale and inviting.

Aroma – hints of apple, citrus and heavy on the strawberry.

Taste – a crisp and dry start, with apple acidity to start. Ripe strawberry and perhaps a touch of cranberry to finish.

Mouthfeel – This wine feels light with mild acidity. A pleasant lingering juicy fruit sensation coats the palate.

Pairing suggestions for M&S Lark Song Balfour Rosé Wine

M&S suggest pairing this wine with seafood, cheese and salad. I took this quite literally and paired it with a starter of caprese salad alongside a freshly baked focccia . Vinegar with wine is normally a no-no, but the balsamic on the salad seemed to make the strawberry in the wine sing.

I followed this with a main course of creamy garlic shrimp pasta – my favourite recipe for this dish is here.

As a pairing, this went down a treat. But next time, I’d probably pick something a little more zesty – perhaps a fresh shrimp & mango salad, with a hint of chilli in the dressing. I have a feeling that a subtle spice could bounce off the strawberry flavours in the wine quite nicely.

That said, I would be just as happy, gleeful even, to drink this wine as an aperitif. There’s nothing quite like Rosé on any empty stomach (drink responsibly of course.)

Occasions and serving tips for M&S Lark Song Balfour Rosé Wine

I like my Rosé extra chilled – I served this at around 7 degrees centigrade. Pretty darn cold.

For glassware, I chose a larger wine glass, which I often do for rosé. A personal choice, but I prefer the aesthetic of a small amount of pink wine in an exceedingly oversized glass.

As for occasion, this is a summer wine. I waited for a May bank holiday, in the hope that opening a bottle of Rosé would encourage the sun to appear. It did not. But, drinking this certainly perked up my day.

I’d say that this wine is best enjoyed with friends at a summer garden frolic. If you’re hosting a big soiree, I’d recommend serving this wine to your guests. It is sure to liven things up, even if the English weather isn’t playing ball.

My review of M&S Lark Song Balfour Rosé Wine

Swimming pool rosé this is not. Although the chance would be a fine thing.

No, this bottle of English rose is too delicate and refined for all that.

TASTE: 8/10

QUAFFABILITY: 9/10

VALUE FOR MONEY: 9/10

BUY AGAIN: Yes

The taste seems to develop more complexity the more you drink it – which is never a bad thing. Just the right side of dry for me i.e. very dry. I’d definitely buy it again, in fact and keep it chilled and ready to spring into action when the sun comes out.

Where can you buy Lark Song Balfour Rosé Wine

Buy Balfour Rosé Wine from your local M&S store, or online. They currently have an offer on – if you buy six, it works at £9 a bottle – absolute bargain! Alternatively, Ocado stocks this wine too.
