Planning a day trip to an English vineyard is easier than you think. With many fantastic vineyards accessible by train from London, you can enjoy a perfect day out without the hassle of driving. Below is a guide to the best vineyards within easy reach of the capital.

THE BEST VINEYARDS NEAR LONDON FOR A DAY OUT BY TRAIN

This list includes a few of my favourites and a few that are on my “to-do” list. Here you can find 27 of the best vineyards near to London to visit – including a few with restaurants, tours and tastings, and more.

Each of the 27 vineyards near London can be accessed in under two hours by train and many are much closer than this.

Look out for this 🚶‍♀️symbol which denotes a few vineyards that don’t require a taxi from the station.

1. BALFOUR WINERY, MARDEN

🚶‍♀️No Taxi Needed

ABOUT BALFOUR:

Found in the beautiful Kent countryside, Balfour Winery is one of the most acclaimed English wine producers. Known for its still and sparkling wines, Balfour has gained recognition for its innovative approach to winemaking, producing some of the most exciting wines in the country.

Personally, I think this is a great vineyard to visit as an introduction to English Wine. The terrace out the back of Balfour is pretty epic and is sure to impress even the fussiest of Londoners. Plus, with the option to try a wine flight, rather than sit down to a formal tasting, there’s relaxed vibe.

Balfour offers a range of tours and tastings, including vineyard walks, guided wine tastings, and the exclusive ‘Balfour Wine & Dine’ experience. The winery also has a stunning terrace overlooking the vineyards where you can enjoy a glass of wine paired with local produce.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Take a train from London Bridge to Marden (approx. 1 hour). From Marden station, it’s a 5-minute taxi ride to the vineyard. You can also walk, it’s perhaps 20-25 minutes. Or, for bigger groups, Balfour will often arrange a shuttle service from the train station.

2. SQUERRYS WINERY, WESTERHAM

ABOUT SQUERRYS:

Squerrys is a family-owned estate with a 300-year history, producing exceptional sparkling wines. The estate’s motto, ‘Born Triumphant,’ reflects their commitment to producing the highest quality wines from their chalky terroir.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

Squerrys offers vineyard tours, tastings, and the chance to explore their beautiful estate. There’s also a charming restaurant on-site where you can enjoy lunch alongside a glass of their award-winning Brut. As of September 2024, you can also find a more relaxed tasting bar where you can sample wines and munch your way through small plates of food.

HOW TO GET THERE:

Take a train from London Charing Cross to Oxted (approx. 35 minutes). From Oxted, it’s a 10-minute taxi ride to the vineyard. You can also take the train to Sevenoaks station (25 mins from London Bridge), which is a short taxi ride away. Squerrys also allow helicopters to land on site – if that’s more your thing!

3. GUSBOURNE WINERY, APPLEDORE

ABOUT GUSBOURNE:

Gusbourne is one of the UK’s most prestigious wine producers, known for its elegant sparkling wines made from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier. The estate’s modern winery and stylish tasting room offer a luxurious wine experience.

4. SIMPSONS WINERY, BARHAM

ABOUT SIMPSONS:

Simpsons Wine Estate is a rising star in English wine, producing both still and sparkling wines. Located in the North Downs, the vineyard benefits from a cool climate and chalky soils, perfect for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Simpsons Roman Road was one of the first ever English wines that I tasted and until this day, remains a stand out for me.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

The estate offers tours on the weekend, which includes a guided walk through the vineyard and winery, followed by a tasting of their premium wines. You can also book their wine tasting on weekdays too.

5. YOTES COURT VINEYARD, WEST PECKHAM

ABOUT YOTES COURT:

Yotes Court is a relative newcomer to the Kent wine scene, producing exceptional still and sparkling wines. Set in the picturesque countryside, the vineyard is dedicated to sustainability and innovation.

Incidentally, I think this vineyard has one of the best views of all Kent vineyards. With hills and countryside in sight for miles. The vineyard itself has a friendly and informal atmosphere. And Yotes Court have a wider range of wines than many vineyards, their Pinto Meunier Rose (Best Turned Out) and Bacchus (On the Nod) are two of my particular faves.

Yotes Court offers guided vineyard tours and tastings, with an emphasis on showcasing their organic farming methods. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon on the terrace with views over the Weald of Kent.

6. DENBIES WINE ESTATE, DORKING

ABOUT DENBIES:

Denbies is one of the largest vineyards in England, producing a wide range of still and sparkling wines. Set in the heart of the Surrey Hills, the estate offers breathtaking views and a fully immersive vineyard experience.

What I really love about vineyard is that it feels like a relaxed and unpretentious space. A place that you can visit even if you don’t know much about wine. The estate is also beautiful.

The wine range at Denbies is particularly remarkable – with reasonably priced bottles of still wine (under £10) and delightful Bacchus fizz (£15) through to more premium wines. There’s something for everyone.

Denbies offers a variety of tours, including indoor winery tours, outdoor vineyard tours by train, and sparkling wine tastings. They also have a vineyard hotel, ideal for those wanting to extend their stay.

Coates & Seely is a super luxury sparkling wine producer in Hampshire, celebrated for its English sparkling wines crafted using traditional methods. Their wines are elegant, complex, and have earned them a stellar reputation in the wine world.

If you want opulence, Coates & Seely can serve this up in a champagne glass. With bells on. They won the best in show in the Decanter World Wine Awards in 2022 for good reason!

12. NYETIMBER VINEYARD, WEST CHILTINGTON

ABOUT NYETIMBER:

Nyetimber is arguably the most famous English wine producer, with a reputation for crafting some of the finest sparkling wines in the world. Their vineyards span across the South of England, and their home estate is in West Sussex. If you’ve ever visited a fancy sports event in England, you’ve probably seen or sampled Nyetimber fizz!

TOURS & TASTINGS:

Although Nyetimber does not offer regular public tours, they do occasionally open their doors for special events and tastings. Keep an eye on their website for opportunities to visit this prestigious vineyard.

Take a train from London Victoria to Pulborough (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes). From Pulborough station, it’s a 10-minute taxi ride to Nyetimber.

ABOUT BOLNEY:

Bolney Wine Estate is one of the pioneers of the English wine industry, with over 50 years of winemaking history. Situated in the South Downs, Bolney is known for its award-winning still and sparkling wines.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

Bolney offers a range of tours, from basic tastings to full vineyard and winery experiences. Their Eighteen Acre Café is also worth a visit, offering delicious food paired with their wines served on a gorgeous terrace.

14. RIDGEVIEW WINE ESTATE, DITCHLING

ABOUT RIDGEVIEW:

Ridgeview is a family-run winery, specialising in producing sparkling wines that rival the best of Champagne. Nestled at the foot of the South Downs, the vineyard benefits from the ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

Ridgeview offers guided tours of their vineyard and winery, followed by tastings of their award-winning sparkling wines. The vineyard also has a charming garden bar where you can enjoy a glass of bubbly overlooking the vines.

They also offer an “Audio Tour” and tasting, which is a real bargain at just £10 per person.

15. ALBURY ORGANIC VINEYARD, SHERE

ABOUT ALBURY:

Albury Vineyard is an organic vineyard located in the Surrey Hills. Known for producing top-quality sparkling wines using biodynamic methods, Albury is dedicated to sustainability and craftsmanship.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

Albury offers regular vineyard tours, tastings, and even vineyard picnics. Visitors can learn about their organic and biodynamic farming practices while enjoying a glass of their exceptional sparkling wine.

Note, tours and tastings are in the summer only at Albury. But there are harvest events in Autumn and sometimes Christmas events too (like indoor wine and cheese tastings on Saturdays in December.)

16. FORTY HALL VINEYARD, ENFIELD

Forty Hall Vineyard is a community-led vineyard on the outskirts of London, making it one of the closest vineyards to the city. The vineyard focuses on organic winemaking and produces a range of still and sparkling wines.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

Forty Hall offers seasonal tours and tastings, providing a fascinating insight into community winemaking in an urban environment. You can also explore the estate’s beautiful grounds.

Keep an eye out for “London’s only farmers market”, which is held on the second Sunday of the month – even until December. Here you can taste Forty Hall’s wines and they sometimes coordinate tours at the same time.

Terlingham Vineyard is a family-run boutique vineyard near the Kent coast, producing a range of still and sparkling wines. The vineyard’s organic and sustainable approach ensures that each bottle reflects the purity of the local terroir.

Westwell wines is a fun and alternative vineyard to visit near to London. A place that is sure to give you a sense of total escapism for the day.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

Westwell offers a range of vineyard tours and tastings, including a relaxed afternoon experience where you can sample their wines on their sun-drenched terrace with views over the Kent countryside.

Westwell cellar door/ tasting room and terrace is open all day Friday, including pizza nights. Saturday and Sunday during the day. Look out for special events like Supper Clubs (which book up fast) as well as Christmas crafting events.

ABOUT WISTON:

Wiston Estate is one of the most highly regarded sparkling wine producers in the UK. Set in the rolling hills of the South Downs, Wiston’s vineyards are situated on ancient chalk soils, perfect for growing classic grape varieties.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

Wiston offers in-depth vineyard and winery tours, giving visitors the chance to learn about their winemaking techniques and taste some of their finest sparkling wines.

New Hall Vineyard is one of the oldest vineyards in the UK, with a history dating back to 1969. Located in Essex, the vineyard is known for its wide variety of award-winning still and sparkling wines, including some unique varietals not commonly found in the UK.

ABOUT THE MOUNT:

The Mount Vineyard is a hidden gem located in the heart of Kent’s Darent Valley. This picturesque vineyard produces a range of still and sparkling wines and offers a charming setting for a relaxing day out.

This is one of the easiest vineyards near London to get to by train and without the need for a taxi. Simply stroll for a few minutes from the train station.

TOURS & TASTINGS:

The Mount offers guided tastings. You can also enjoy wine and wood-fired pizza on their terrace, overlooking the vines.

The Mount is also a particular favourite of mine throughout the Autumn and Winter as there’s a super cozy restaurant, where you can snuggle up with a glass of red and some warming food.

Mousehall Vineyard is a boutique vineyard and distillery located in the rolling hills of East Sussex near Wadhurst.

Mousehall produces a range of spirits as well as Tidebrook Wines including Rose, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
