WINE TASTING IN EAST SUSSEX: AN IDYLLIC WINE WEEKEND FROM LONDON.
On a recent weekend away I had the pleasure of visiting two vineyards near Rye for the ultimate wine weekend.
This itinerary for wine tasting in East Sussex could be the ultimate weekend away from London, for the wine lover in your life. Whether you are celebrating a birthday, an anniversary, or just throwing caution go the wind and having a weekend away in Sussex – read on to find out more.
First up, visit the town of Rye
Rye is the quintessential English market town, brimming with charm. Its cobbled streets, medieval buildings, and boutique shops make it a perfect starting point for your weekend.
Take a stroll down Mermaid Street, admire the historic Landgate, and pop into quaint tearooms or pubs for a light bite. For panoramic views, head up to the church tower of St. Mary’s.
I’m also a huge fan of the antique stores in Rye, I have spent many an hour browsing old bric-a-brac in these shops. And for me, no visit to Rye is complete without a rummage.
Next, a tour at Tillingham Wine
A short drive from Rye, Tillingham Wine is a biodynamic vineyard set amidst rolling hills. Tillingham is as much about the ethos as the wine; the estate prioritizes sustainability and low-intervention winemaking. The whole complex has a bit of a bouji and maverick vibe, it’s a lot of fun to visit.
Book a guided tour to learn about their process, then settle in for a tasting session. Their natural sparkling wines are a must-try. If the weather is fine, grab a spot on the terrace overlooking the vineyard or take cover in their Pizza barn or instead the Michelin Green Star restaurant.

Picnic in the vines at Oxney Organic Wine Estate
The next day, I would recommend heading to Oxney Organic Wine Estate for a total wine treat. They offer a fantastic experience – an estate tour, wine tasting and picnic in the vines. Oxney specializes in all things oganics and their wine is particularly luxurious.

An afternoon walk on Camber Sands
No visit to this part of East Sussex would be complete without a trip to Camber Sands. With its expansive golden dunes and sweeping shoreline, it’s the ideal spot to get some steps in, blow the cobwebs away and just take in the stunning beach. If you have time, linger until sunset—it’s a magical way to end the day.

There are three locations that are ideal to stay overnight for this East Sussex wine tasting weekend itinerary.
The Gallivant, Camber Sands

Oh and for anyone travelling with a dog, The Gallivant is dog friendly! I visited with my Labrador a few years back and we had a delightful time! He very much approved.

The George in Rye, is located in the heart of the old town. An historic coaching inn with modern flair. Its beautifully decorated rooms and cozy bar make it a welcoming base. From here, you can easily explore Rye and its surroundings. There’s also a super in-house restaurant, so you won’t have to go far in the evening.

Tillingham Wine Estate
For the ultimate vineyard experience, why not stay on-site at Tillingham? Their converted farm buildings feature stylish and rustic accommodations, complete with countryside views. Wake up surrounded by vines and enjoy breakfast before starting another day of wine adventures.
In Summer, you can also opt for a bell tent on the grounds of the vineyard. What an adventure.

How to get to East Sussex
If you’re travelling by car, Rye and the surrounding areas are an easy drive from London or elsewhere in Kent/ Sussex. It can be helpful to have a car to get around for this weekend itinerary. If you go to two wine tastings – perhaps you can take it in turns with your travel buddy to be the designated driver.
For anyone using public transport, I would recommend taking the train to Rye train station. From there, you’ll need to rely on taxis to the vineyards and a bus to Camber Sands.
Train services are operated by Southern Rail from either Ashford International (20 minutes) or London St Pancras (1 hour 6 minutes.)
