LOVE RIESLING? THESE ENGLISH PINOT GRIS WINES MIGHT JUST SURPRISE YOU.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve been head over heels for a cheeky Riesling—with its vibrant zing and playful fruit notes. But, have you ever given the English Pinot Gris a proper go?
I was a bit hesitant at first—after all, Riesling has been my glass of choice for ages—but then I tried an English Pinot Gris that completely flipped the script. Think of it as Riesling’s stylish, enigmatic cousin: equally fun, just a touch more understated, and with a secret twist that keeps you guessing.
Get ready to discover a wine that’s as delightfully surprising as finding a bargain at a posh boutique—savour every sip, and let the good times flow!
What’s the difference between Pinot Gris and Riesling?
It would be remiss of me not to mention that the two grapes are quite different — this isn’t a “dupe” situation, more a vibe match. Think less identical twins, more distant cousins who turn up to the same party.
Riesling is famously aromatic, high in acidity, and can swing anywhere from bone dry to dessert-sweet. It’s the drama queen of the wine world — expressive, zingy, often petrol-scented (in a good way), and always up for a good time.
Pinot Gris, on the other hand, is a little more subtle. Still aromatic, but softer and rounder. In cooler climates — like, say, Devon or Kent — English Pinot Gris tends to be dry and gently perfumed, with ripe pear, melon, citrus peel and a whisper of spice. Less of a diva, more of a flirt.
So while they don’t taste the same, English Pinot Gris ticks a lot of the same boxes as your favourite Riesling: it’s refreshing, food-friendly, and a bit of a scene-stealer when made well. Plus, it’s still flying under the radar — which means you get to be the trendsetter at the table.
5 English Pinot Gris to get your hands on
1. Stopham Estate Pinot Gris 2023 – West Sussex
Where to buy: Stopham Estate (£22.95)
This is the English Pinot Gris that often gets name-checked for a reason. It’s aromatic, with bright pear and nectarine on the nose, and a fresh, zingy palate. There’s a lovely touch of residual sugar (around 8.5g/L), which gives it that gentle off-dry lift—think Mosel Riesling, but with an English accent.
It’s food-friendly too—ideal with Thai dishes, sushi, or a tangy goat’s cheese salad.
“This wine always reminds me why Pinot Gris deserves more attention in the UK. Elegant, refreshing, and very easy to love.”
2. Oastbrook Pinot Gris 2023 – East Sussex
Where to buy: Oastbrook Estate (£23.50)
From the picturesque Rother Valley, this Pinot Gris is more Alsace in style—slightly richer on the palate, with notes of honeysuckle, apricot and a subtle ginger spice on the finish.
If you’re after something that still has freshness but offers a bit more weight and texture, this is a great shout. There’s even a soft, waxy quality that fans of mature Riesling will appreciate.
Bonus: the label is very pretty, and the vineyard would be worth a visit if you’re in the area – it’s on my list!
3. Yotes Court Loose Rein – (UK)
Where to buy: Direct from Yotes Court £19
Darling, sometimes you need a wine that’s as playful as it is complex. Enter Yotes Court Loose Rein—a cheeky Pinot Gris with a rebel twist. Expect bright citrus notes mingling with hints of tropical fruit and a subtle herbal whisper. It’s the kind of wine that makes you want to loosen those reins on your expectations and just sip, smile, and savour every drop. Perfect for a sunny picnic or a cheeky after-lunch spritz.
Incidentally, Yotes Court is one of my favourite vineyards to visit in Kent – it has terrific views and lovely staff.
Fun fact – Wondering why the Yotes Courts bottles all have “horsey” names? The owner of Yotes Court also owns a number of prize winning race horses.
4. Stopham Estate Pinot Gris – West Sussex
Where to buy: Majestic Wine £20 when you mix 6.
Stopham Estate brings a flair to Pinot Gris that’s hard to resist. With aromas of crisp green apple, delicate pear, and a whisper of spice, this wine is elegantly refreshing. Straight from the lush, rolling hills of Devon, Sharpham’s Wild Ferment “Little Bee” is a true celebration of nature in a bottle. Crafted using wild yeast fermentation and whole bunch pressing, this Pinot Gris has that raw, untamed character that whispers of apple, a hint of lemon balm, and a subtle nuttiness with an earthy twist.
