Wildwood Vineyard Saxonbury Rose review

WILDWOOD VINEYARD SAXONBURY ROSÉ 2023 REVIEW: A FESTIVAL FIND & PICNIC PERFECTION

Rosé. The quintessential sip of summer, isn’t it? Whether it’s a whisper-pale Provence style or a more vibrant, fruit-forward number, a good rosé promises lightness, refreshment, and often, a moment of pure bliss. And when that rosé hails from our very own English vineyards? Well, you know my ears are perked, ready for a delightful discovery.

So, imagine my sheer delight when, amidst the lively hum of a far flung food festival, I stumbled upon a true gem: the Saxonbury Rosé 2023 from Wildwood Vineyard in East Sussex. This wasn’t some hushed, high-brow tasting; oh no. This was a proper, down-to-earth experience, sipping from unassuming plastic cups. And yet, even in those rustic conditions, the wine gave us a good run for our money.

In this blog post, you’ll find my review of the Wildwood Vineyard Saxonbury Rosé 2023. What does it taste like? Is it value for money? And, why is this one so perfectly suited for your next al fresco adventure?

About Wildwood Vineyard

Now, let’s talk about Wildwood Vineyard. This isn’t your average rolling estate, all manicured lawns and grand tasting rooms. Oh no, Wildwood is something rather special. Tucked away in East Sussex, on the Wealden Wine Trail, this vineyard operates completely off-grid. Yes, you heard that right – entirely powered by sustainable energy sources, they’re walking the talk when it comes to environmental responsibility.

Wildwood is deeply committed to sustainable viticulture, making sure every grape grown has a touch of the eco about it (without, you know, tasting like compost. Promise!). It’s a truly inspiring approach to winemaking that respects the land and its resources. This background alone makes the Saxonbury Rosé not just a pretty face, but a wine with a conscience.

Whilst I’ve not yet visited (feel free to send me an invite!) I hear that it’s a jolly place to spend a sunny summer afternoon. Made even more special by the fact that you can take the Spa Valley Railway line almost directly to the vineyard in Eridge, East Sussex. This has to be one of the most unique wine tasting experiences you can do in the UK.

Tasting Notes for Wildwood Vineyard Saxonbury Rosé 2023

So, to the taste test, even if it was from a plastic cup (don’t judge, it was a festival!):

Appearance – A soft, inviting pink-red, like the most exquisite silk blouse. It’s got that delicate hue that whispers of summer evenings.

Aroma – Fresh and inviting. I picked up delightful notes of juicy red fruits, with a clear burst of raspberry leading the charge.

Taste – Oh, this is easy drinking personified! The palate mirrors the nose beautifully, with those vibrant raspberry and strawberry notes front and centre. It’s wonderfully juicy, offering a burst of fresh fruit without being cloyingly sweet. The 11.5% alcohol content makes it wonderfully drinkable – heady but not “fally-down juice,” as I like to say.

Mouthfeel – Smooth and refreshing. It’s got a lovely, light body that glides across the palate. There’s a pleasant crispness from that hint of citrus that keeps it lively.

Pairing Suggestions for Wildwood Vineyard Saxonbury Rosé 2023

This is a wine that truly shines in a relaxed, al fresco setting.

  • Picnics, BBQs & Garden Parties: This is its natural habitat. Think anything from grilled chicken skewers, vibrant summer salads, or even a classic pork pie.
  • British Cheeses: I grabbed some cheese from a nearby stall, and can confirm that a nice creamy cheese matches well. The acidity and fruit would cut beautifully through the richness.
  • Seafood: Perfect with prawns, a light crab salad, or even some delicate grilled white fish.

This wine is a fantastic standalone sipper too. It’s got enough character to keep you interested without needing food as a crutch.

Occasions and serving tips for Wildwood Vineyard Saxonbury Rose

This is the wine you want to pack for that quintessential English summer experience. Whether you’re heading to a local food festival (plastic cups or not!), a casual garden party, or a day out hiking with a picnic packed, the Saxonbury Rosé 2023 is your perfect companion.

And that screw cap? Genius! While some purists might frown, I say hurrah! No need for corkscrews– just pure, unadulterated enjoyment, ready to be poured at a moment’s notice. It makes it incredibly handy for any outdoor occasion.

Serving Tip: Make sure it’s properly chilled. Fridge-cold is ideal for this style of refreshing rosé.

My review of Wildwood Vineyard Saxonbury Rose

The Wildwood Vineyard Saxonbury Rosé 2023 is a truly delightful find. It’s a vibrant, fruit-forward rosé that embodies easy-drinking elegance.

TASTE: 7/10

QUAFFABILITY: 8/10

VALUE FOR MONEY: 7.5/10

BUY AGAIN: Yes, go on then.

The fact that it comes from an off-grid, sustainable vineyard only adds to its charm and appeal. It’s a testament to the fact that English wine can be both delicious and responsible.

That aside, I very much enjoy the characteristic of a rose wine made with 100% Pinot Noir. A classic cool climate grape. This is a wine that delivers on many fronts. Flavour, character and touch of eco-chic.

Where to buy it

At the moment, it’s just direct from vineyard I’m afraid. You can pick it on a visit to Wildwood Vineyard – or order it online from their website.
