Aldi English Wine: Bowler & Brolly Wine Review

ALDI ENGLISH WINE: BOWLER & BROLLY WINE: WHITE CUVEE REVIEW

I am quite excited to see that supermarkets are getting into the English wine scene. In my quest to sample as many of them as I can, I picked up bottle of Aldi’s Bowler & Brolley White Cuvee. At a snip under £10, it seemed rude not to try it.

In this review, I’ll let you know what I thought about the Bowler & Brolley White Cuvee. Is it worth buying next time you’re in Aldi?

Is this the cheapest English wine on the market?

English wine is notoriously expensive. I believe that the Aldi Bowler & Brolly Cuvee is one of the only bottles of English wine that you can get for under £10 in 2024. Certainly, it is one of the easiest to get hold of.

Having scanned the shelves in Aldi, I noticed that the cost of European wine is creeping up. Meaning that this bottle of Aldi English wine priced at £9.99 doesn’t quite feel like such guilty purchase in comparison.

What is Bowler & Brolly wine?

Aldi have been quite smart in creating an alter ego in the form of Bowler & Brolly English wine. The brand is, as you’ve probably guessed, supposed to be seen as quintessentially English.

The supermarket chain has been producing a range of English still and sparkling wine in conjunction with wineries from around England. This has included Denbies in Surrey and Lyme Bay in Devon – both big and well know English wine producers.

About Aldi Bowler & Brolly English White Cuvee

The White Cuvee 2022 is a limited edition, created by wine maker Sarah Massey of Lyme Bay Vineyard. The wine currently retails for £9.99 in Aldi.

One thing that I really don’t like about this bottle of wine, is that Aldi do not disclose which grapes are used to make it. As a cuvee, the wine is a blend of different grapes. My assumption is that Aldi choose not to disclose the grape varieties in case they change over time, and thus Aldi would need to reprint labels. Nevertheless, it doesn’t give a feel of a premium product if you don’t tell the customer anything about the wine.

One of the things that I love about drinking English wine is tasting wine made with different grapes and getting to know the differences – this Aldi wine takes that joy away somewhat. I believe it contains Bacchus but frustratingly cannot confirm!

Tasting notes for Aldi Bowler & Brolly White Cuvee

So to the taste test – here’s my review of Bowler & Brolly White Cuvee 2022.

Appearance – the wine bottle has had a bit of a revamp, the label looks more attractive than previous incarnations but is still not that exciting. In the glass, the wine is a pale lemon in colour.

Aroma – on the nose, the wine is initially quite heady (somewhat of a euphemism.) After a good swirl and another sniff, I could catch the melon notes, but I wasn’t expecting to like the taste.

Taste – the taste was much more pleasant than the aroma gave away. Definitive notes of melon and apple up front, with an almost creamy honey suckle after taste. Actually, a bit of a taste sensation.

Mouthfeel – the Bowler & Brolly White Cuvee is deliciously crisp and smooth. I’d describe it as medium bodied, slightly thicker than I’d expect from Bacchus, which left me wondering if there’s some Chardonnay in there.

Pairing suggestions for Aldi Bowler & Brolly White Cuvee

Aldi suggest pairing this wine with Seafood or grilled vegetables. I’d agree with that. To me it seems that this wine is bold enough to tolerate a little spice too.

I tried this wine without food as an aperitif and enjoyed it. Then later paired a glass with salmon in a jalfrezi sauce – and I felt that the food enhanced the flavour of the wine.

As a very summery wine, I could see the Bowler & Brolly white wine doing well alongside some char-grilled chicken and a fresh citrus salad. It would sit well on any BBQ table.

Occasions and serving tips for Aldi Bowler & Brolly White Cuvee

My first sip of this wine transported me to summer. A feeling of golden hour and endless evenings. I could envisage myself in denim cut offs sitting atop a hay bale drinking this. Or something of that ilk.

It would be simply marvelous served at a summer garden party, I’d gladly drink it at any celebration.

This wine is best served chilled, ideally whip it straight from the fridge and keep it chilled in a wine cooler. This is not a wine that will be at it’s best if too warm. Opt for a larger white wine glass to let the wine breath.

My review of Bowler & Brolly White Cuvee

Whilst I still cannot get onboard with the branding – it’s as if somebody just came up with two “English” words – Bowler & Brolly. Nor do I like the look of the label. This wine does drink well.

TASTE: 8/10

QUAFFABILITY: 8/10

VALUE FOR MONEY: 9/10

BUY AGAIN: Yes

And, for the price point, this bottle of English wine wine is now a realistic alternative to French or Italian white. A Saturday night staple for the summer months, rather than something you have to save for a special occasion.

Where can you buy Bowler & Brolly White Cuvee

Bowler & Brolly is an Aldi brand, so the only place you buy this wine is Aldi. You may not find it in every store, but the larger ones will stock it. Alternatively, you can click and collect from Aldi online. Each customer is limited to ten bottles.
